An electro-acoustic guitar is an acoustic guitar which has been fitted with piezoelectric pickups to allow amplification. The pickup usually requires an on-board pre-amplifier in order to boost the signal before plugging into an amplifier. Tone controls or an equalizer are often included to control the sound. A semi-acoustic guitar is an electric guitar with sound chambers in the body and thus differs from an electro-acoustic.
